Chapter 5: Civil servants pull limited edition gacha

An Ordinary Civil Servant’s Transfer to Another World A Gacha-Dependent Life Relying on Luck

At the carriage station, I heard about an inn called the Lantern. As its name suggested, it was a small inn with an old lantern hanging by the entrance.

When I pushed open the door and stepped inside, the wooden floor creaked softly underfoot. The interior had a cozy, homely atmosphere, and behind the counter, a middle-aged woman who appeared to be the landlady was busily working.

“I’d like a room.”

When I spoke up, the landlady turned around and smiled warmly.

“Seven copper coins will get you a room upstairs with dinner and breakfast included.”

I handed over a silver coin, and she efficiently returned three copper coins as change.

“I’ll need to leave early tomorrow for the carriage…”

“In that case, I’ll give you some bread that can be saved for breakfast when you have dinner tonight. You can leave whenever you need without worrying.”

“That’s very kind of you.”

After being shown to my room, I found a simple wooden bed and a small desk inside. There was only one window on the wall for light, and since the sun was already setting, the room was dimly lit.

Lighting the provided lantern filled the space with a soft glow, and I let out a sigh of relief.

Sitting on the bed, I checked my remaining funds.

I had wanted to count them earlier, but I decided it would be dangerous to do so in the middle of the town.

I spread out gold, silver, and copper coins on the floor and counted them again.

“Nineteen gold coins, four silver coins, and three copper coins.”

Roughly converting the amounts into Japanese yen, each gold coin was worth about 100,000 yen, each silver coin about 10,000 yen, and each copper coin about 1,000 yen.

Not bad at all, considering it came from the king.

Perhaps he thought giving me this much would get rid of me or serve as some form of apology for essentially kidnapping me under the guise of their convenience.

“The first rule is not to waste any of this.”

With that resolution in mind, I headed downstairs, where dinner was ready. On the table was a stew-like dish and some hard bread.

“All I ate back in Japan were convenience store meals.”

While it wasn’t a feast, the warmth of a proper meal felt healing after such a long time.

After finishing my meal and returning to my room, there was only one thing left to do.

“Alright, let’s try the *Gacha*.”

Reflecting on the long day, my thoughts had been consumed by the *Gacha*.

It might just be the key to surviving in this world. The thought made my fatigue and sleepiness vanish instantly.

Focusing my mind on the word *Gacha*, the familiar gacha interface appeared before me. Without hesitation, I swiped to the page for the beginner-exclusive gacha and stopped.

“Beginner-Exclusive Gacha Available”

The words made my heart race. I tapped on the description.

UR (Ultra Rare) drop rate: 10%, SSR (Super Super Rare): 90%. This was an opportunity that likely wouldn’t come again—insanely good odds for a gacha.

“Beginner-Exclusive Gacha… One gold coin. Alright, this is the moment to make a move.”

I took out a gold coin and placed it near the designated slot on the terminal.

Instantly, the screen brightened, and dazzling effects of golden and rainbow lights filled my vision.

“Woah, this is incredible… nothing like the regular gacha.”

Presumably, the shifting golden and rainbow effects indicated URs were rainbow-colored and SSRs were gold.

Feeling my heartbeat quicken, I placed my finger on the “Draw Gacha” button at the center of the screen and whispered a prayer.

“Please… let it be a UR…!”

As soon as I pressed the button, the screen grew even brighter, and the entire display turned golden.

“Damn, the 10% didn’t hit…”

But then, the golden effect gradually shifted to rainbow hues, filling my vision with radiant colors.

A glowing orb emerged from the center of the screen, slowly taking shape before floating in front of me.

“T-this is… a UR!”

When the orb shattered, a shining skill labeled *Appraisal* appeared. The skill’s icon glowed, and a warm sensation spread through my chest.

“So… this is a UR skill?”

I activated *Appraisal* to check its details. Instantly, my status screen appeared at the edge of my vision.

Occupation: Local Government Worker

Level: 1

HP: 25

MP: 8

Strength: 7

Stamina: 11

Magic Power: 9

Resistance: 4

Agility: 4

Skills: Appraisal ☆

Unique Skills: Foreign Language Comprehension, Gacha

“Wow, now I can see my own stats.”

I noticed I could tap on the skills and did so.

Gacha: Draw using gold coins or monster defeat points. Includes various types like limited-time gachas and beginner-exclusive gachas. Rewards range from duds to powerful skills and familiars. Drawing has a fairly high barrier, and naturally, rerolling isn’t possible.

Appraisal ☆: Grants the ability to appraise items, people, and skills. While there are lesser appraisal skills used by item appraisers and blacksmiths, the amount of information revealed depends on rarity. Without this skill, appraising someone’s stats requires an ancient crystal occasionally found in ruins.

“Got it… So this lets me understand my abilities, others’ stats, and items.”

What’s with the ☆? Is it like a level?

I checked the details of my stats.

Level: Represents growth. Increasing it raises overall capabilities. Gained by accumulating experience in tasks related to your occupation, such as defeating monsters or casting spells.

HP: Indicates vitality. Determines how much damage you can withstand in battle. Reaching 0 results in incapacitation, and death follows if left untreated. HP regenerates gradually over time.

MP: Energy consumed when casting spells. Higher MP allows for more powerful or frequent spell use. Regenerates gradually over time.

Strength: Directly affects physical attack power. Important for close combat and handling heavy objects.

Stamina: Represents defense and endurance. Influences performance in prolonged battles or while wearing heavy equipment.

Magic Power: Affects the strength and effectiveness of magic. Higher values allow for stronger spells.

Resistance: Indicates resistance to status ailments and elemental attacks. Reduces damage from poison, fire, etc.

Agility: Related to speed and evasion. Impacts action speed and chances to dodge attacks.

“Let’s try appraising an item.”

I pulled out an old, small hammer from my pocket and activated the *Appraisal* skill.

Old, Small Hammer (R): Can imbue weapons or armor with latent abilities. Effects improve significantly when wielded by someone skilled in blacksmithing. Usable three more times out of five.

“Ah, so that’s why it didn’t work when I used it on a sword without latent abilities. Seems like the chancellor couldn’t properly appraise it. Items obtained from the gacha are initially in an unknown state? Lucky breaks all around.”

Thanks to the *Appraisal* skill, the value of this hammer skyrocketed. Moreover, this skill would allow me to quickly understand the effects of anything obtained from the gacha.

“This *Appraisal* skill is pretty useful, isn’t it?”

Basking in the satisfaction of acquiring the skill, I started pondering what to do next with my remaining funds. My eyelids grew heavier by the minute.

I wanted to do an 11-roll with ten gold coins, but now wasn’t the time.

“Tomorrow’s going to be early. For now, that’s enough for today.”

Lying down on the bed, wrapped in the sense of accomplishment from my first big gamble in this other world, I drifted off into a peaceful sleep.
